What
is herbal medicine?
Herbal medicine is the use of plant
remedies to treat disease. It is the oldest form of medicine known
and still the most widely practised form of medicine in the world.
Almost any condition a patient might take to their doctor can be
supported by herbal medicine.
Medical Herbalists are trained in
the same diagnostic skills as orthodox doctors but, generally, take
a more holistic approach to illness. A herbalist aims to identify
the underlying cause of the problem and selects herbs to help restore
balance to the body; promoting the healing process and supporting
all body systems. The practitioner will devise an individual treatment
plan, incorporating herbal medicines and advice about diet and lifestyle.
The first consultation usually takes
between 1 hour and 1¼ hours and comprises of a full case
history and a physical examination. If used, current medication
should be brought to the session so that it can be recorded on the
notes and appropriate remedies selected. Follow-up consultations
normally take about 30-45 minutes and a patient will be seen every
4-8 weeks thereafter, depending on progress. Chronic conditions
may need to be treated long term.
